What’s Really in Your Water?

There are over 250 contaminants commonly found in American drinking water. In truth, even if your home water is regulated by state and local governments, it doesn’t make it safe to drink or even use. Why? Because well regulated (legal) does not mean scientifically proven to be safe. This is why a whole house water filter is critical in helping eliminate those toxic contaminants which studies show can cause many health risks including cancer.

I’ve had a home water purification system from these guys installed for about 6 months now. The system runs great, the few times I have had to call to get some extra support, or with a question, they have been responsive and able to help.

All sources of water for human consumption and use, whether from lakes, rivers or wells, contain some form of contamination. This contamination can be those that occur naturally, such as minerals, or man-made chemicals, and other byproducts and pathogens. This then necessitates the use of water filtration systems to improve the quality of water. Filtration is a process that can include physical, chemical and other means to remove all the impurities from water and make it safe to drink. Most water filtration systems installed by civic bodies go through coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation to remove large undissolved solids, filtration to remove smaller particles, and finally disinfection to remove pathogens.

In spite of the best efforts of municipal filtration plants, the water that is received in most homes will contain some pollution and chemicals that can often require households to install water filters to ensure a safe and better quality of water. Installing a whole-house filter at the point where the home receives the main water supply can ensure that all the water used in the home is wholesome and safe to drink and use. A whole house water filter will remove all the contaminants from the water. A better quality of water will lead to all appliances that use water, like heaters and others to have a longer life, as the water that is being used is freed of all chemicals and minerals that can cause deposits.

To clean and refine the entire water supply received in a home any water filter system needs to have several filtration media that treat the water. The first stage filtration is carried out by granular activated carbon that acts to trap and absorb organic molecules and microscopic particles that helps to remove any smell or a bad taste in the water. Municipal water will often contain bleach chlorine and byproducts of disinfectant used infiltration systems. The water filter system will then send the water through an ion exchanger that has resin beads that are electrically charged so that magnesium and calcium that cause hardness are removed. It can also have a bacteria inhibitor that prevents fungi and other bacteria from growing in the water. A further filtration media will make all the water free of any sedimentation.

All these various treatments that the water has gone through in municipal filtration systems and then through your whole house water filter should render the water pure and safe to drink. There are many other methods for the purifying of water and to be doubly safe you can install any one of these systems at water points in kitchens where drinking water and water used for cooking is accessed in a home.

Minerals in water can cause deposits in pipes, heaters and all other appliances that use water. These deposits can greatly reduce the efficiency of these appliances and reduce their working life. A water softener can go a long way to remove all these minerals and make the water safer to use. Water softening requires the removal mainly of calcium and magnesium that are dissolved in the water and often come from natural sources. Softening of water will ensure that you require less soap for the same effort at cleaning. As deposits get reduced, the life cycle of plumbing systems and water-using appliances is increased. Ion exchange and reverse osmosis are very effective in removing the minerals that cause hardness.

Osmosis is a natural phenomenon where weaker saline solutions migrate to stronger saline solutions. Reverse osmosis is a process of water purification that removes large particles, unwanted molecules and other ions from water. The process uses a membrane that is partially permeable to remove the impurities from water.
The water has to be passed through the membrane under pressure and this results in over 95 percent of the dissolved salts in the water to be retained by the membrane allowing only pure water to pass through.

An RO water purifier uses the process of reverse osmosis to purify water. Most RO water purifiers will have additional carbon cartridges and filters to give the water an initial purification. This filtered water is then forced through a membrane for the process of reverse osmosis where the dissolved solids are retained on the membrane and allowed to drain out, leading to some loss of water. This water that is drained out contains all the dissolved solids and can be used for purposes other than drinking or cooking.

Alkaline water is water that has a pH level that is higher than that found in normal drinking water. It is water that is rich in alkalizing compounds that includes bicarbonate, magnesium, potassium, silica, and calcium. Drinking and using alkaline water for consumption can help to neutralize the acids that are in the bloodstream. It has been said that this can help in the prevention of diseases of the heart and cancer. It is said to be beneficial to people who suffer from diabetes, high cholesterol, and blood pressure. Studies are still being conducted on these theories and there is as yet no firm conclusion.

Pure water has a pH value of 7 and most groundwater systems have pH values that vary from 6 to 8.5, making them either slightly acidic or mildly alkaline. The human body has more than 60 percent as water, and that is why the pH value in this water can have a great effect on all body chemistry. All the processes of the body from digestion, breathing, circulation, to the production of hormones act to balance pH. This is done by removing the metabolized acid residues so that no damage is caused to living cells. Drinking water helps to maintain the pH levels so that cells are neither having to face an acidic or alkaline environment.

Ionized water is water that contains mineral ions. All water that is found in nature has some minerals as it comes in contact with sediments and rocks. Even rainwater that is often said to be pure water does contain bicarbonate ions that it picks up from the carbon dioxide that is naturally in the atmosphere. Water that is distilled or purified through reverse osmosis has no minerals and is therefore considered deionized water. You will find makers of RO filters adding cartridges with minerals so that the final water obtained has some amount of ionization in the form of minerals. Ionized water that is alkaline with a pH greater than 7, can reduce the effects of oxidation damage in the cells of the human body. Home water ionizers use electromagnetism to separate minerals that are positively charged from the negative bicarbonate materials. The separation process in ionizers create alkaline water and water that is acidic and these are separated into different chambers. Studies have suggested that the drinking of ionized alkaline water can have health benefits.

Kangen water is nothing but a fancy name for alkaline water and is water that is made in Kangen machines which are just sophisticated ionizers. Kangen is a Japanese word for “return to origin” and is a trademark name used by a Japanese corporation. The health benefits that you get from Kangen water or alkaline water are the same and come from the mineral hydrates that the process of ionization enriches. The quality of Kangen water is determined by how efficiently the ionizer converts carbonates of minerals into their hydrates.
