Salt Water Softeners:

This type of water softener cycles household water through two tanks: one with special resin beads(also know as media) and the other filled with brine(a salt liquid made by adding salt and water to create a solvent). It works on the principle of ion exchange, softening hard water by substituting sodium (salt) for hard minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Salt-Free Water Softeners:

These types of water softeners use a potassium-chloride salt substitute. The idea is that these systems are better then not having a water softening system at all.

How Long Will My Water Softener Last?

The average life of a water softener system is 10 to 15 years, but water softeners can last for up to 20 years if taken care of and by refilling the salt when it needs it and making sure the system is backflushing on a regular basis.
